In case of serious illness or accident when the surgery is closed, your best option would be to attend Accident & Emergency Department. This department is based at Fairfield General Hospital. If you cannot make your own way there you will need to call 999 for an ambulance. At the Bury Walk-in Centre site, there are is a Dental Access Centre where patients may attend for NHS dental care if they are not registered with a dentist. (If you are registered with a dentist then your own dentist has the responsibility for providing your routine care and emergency out of hours arrangement). Doctors are not trained or qualified to provide dental advice and you should always, even for urgent out of hours problems, contact a dentist instead of a doctor if you have a dental problem, NHS Direct offers 24 hour telephone advice by specially trained nurse. There is also an NHS Direct Online website which gives advice to help you manage various conditions, click the follwoing link: BARDOC is based in the same premises as the Walk-in Centre on Parsons Lane. Therefore, it is possible for the Walk-in Centre to easily refer patients onto BARDOC doctors and nurses if they cannot manage your problem. BARDOC is run as a co-operative of local GPs from Bury and Rochdale to provide out of hours help for URGENT medical problems. When you call BARDOC the receptionist will take your details and pass them to one of the duty doctors or nurses. Usually you will be called back by the doctor or nurse. Sometimes your query can be resolved over the phone, and sometimes you will be advised to attend the Bardoc premises for a face-to-face consultation with one of the BARDOC duty doctors. Home visits can also be arranged if required on medical grounds, but the majority of calls are managed either by telephone or by the patient attending BARDOC. Out of hours services are only available for URGENT medical problems which cannot wait until the surgery is open. BARDOC and the other services mentioned cannot provide you with routine services for which you should attend the surgery during the day in the usual way. The only exceptions to this are NHS Direct and Walk-in Centres which are available for you to contact whenever they are open. |
